Health Room

The nurses' offices at EAMS are located in Room A203 for Grade 6 and Room C302B for grades 7 and 8. Each office is staffed with a Certified School Nurse (CSN). Normal office hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 am - 3:00 pm on school days. You can reach the health rooms directly by calling 610-250-2460 and entering the appropriate extension, found below:

The school nurse provides health services to students and their families that promote physical and emotional health. Some examples include:

• First aid 
• Medication administration 
• Health teaching 
• Referral to community resources 
• Counseling and support 
• Health screenings 
• Coordination of mandated exams Enforcement of immunizations code

The goal of our team approach is to secure and promote student health so that children may meet their optimal learning potential.

Medication Policy

The administration of prescription and /or over-the–counter medication to children during school hours should be avoided whenever possible. Administration of medication in school may occur when you:

• Complete the Medication Authorization Form with the doctor and parent signatures 
• Have an adult supply the medication in the original container to the nurse 
• Children may not transport medication to school as per district policy

Parents will be notified to refill the medication supply, as needed, and will receive notification at the end of the year to pick up any remaining medication by the last day of school before medications are discarded.

Examinations 

PA law requires that all children entering school for the first time show proof that they have had a physical exam. A physical exam is also required in grade 11. Please take the Private Physician's Report of Physical Examination form to your Health Care Provider for completion and then return to the school nurse. A school physician is available for mandated exams only (not sick visits) to assess your child if you do not have a private doctor.

Health Care Provider lists are available in the Health Room should you need assistance locating a provider.

Immunizations

Before your child may attend school, you must show proof of adequate immunization from a doctor or clinic:

• 4 DPT doses (diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus – one after the 4th birthday) 
• 4 Polio doses (one after the 4th birthday)
• 3 Hepatitis B doses 
• 2 MMR doses (measles, mumps, rubella) 
• 2 Varicella doses (chicken pox)

Seventh through 12th Grade ADDITIONAL immunization requirements for attendance:

Entrance into 7th Grade:

• 1 Tdap dose (tetanus, diphteria, acellular pertussis)
• 1 MCV (first dose)

Entrance into 12th Grade:

• 2 MCV doses (meningococcal conjugate vaccine)
  • First dose is given 11-15 years of age; a second dose is required at age 16 or entry into 12th grade.
  • If the dose was given at 16 years of age or older, only one dose is required.

If your child is exempt from immunizations due to religious or medical reasons, your child may be removed from school during a disease outbreak.

Absences

If your child is ill and will be absent from school, please call your child's grade level office to report the absence.

Gym Excuse/Special Considerations

An excuse from your Health Care Provider is required for release from physical education classes. For a gym excuse lasting two weeks or longer, your Health Care Provider needs to complete a Physician's Physical Education Recommendation form. Students with medical conditions that require accommodations such as elevator keys, hall passes, student escorts, etc. should bring a note from their Health Care Provider to the nurse.
